Suspicious Package On Train in North Bergen Was ‘Electronic Device’

UPDATE: A suspicious packae on a CSX train in North Bergen contained an electronic device that bomb squad officers blasted with a water cannon, and authorities are still trying to determine what it is.
The woman form Florida who called police this morning and said a bomb was on the train later said it was just a hoax, though the bomb squad kept searching the train until they found the package she referred to.

A CSX train carrying what authorities were told could be a bomb in a Federal Express package is stopped in North Bergen while members of the Jersey City police and Bergen County bomb squads scour the car looking for the parcel, police said.
According to police officials at the scene, a woman in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., called CSX this morning and alerted them that a bomb may be on the train, which was headed to a depot in North Bergen from Florida.
Officials at the scene said the woman believed the package was sent by her ex-boyfriend. CSX officials alerted North Bergen police while the train was still in Somerset County and North Bergen called CSX and asked them to stop the train, police said.
CSX apparently did stop the train this afternoon but then sent it on its way again, according to North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco. Emergency responders met the train near West Side Avenue around 57th Street at about 5:30 and the car containing the suspicious package was detached and the rest of the train continued on, officials said.
The two bomb squads are now trying to find the package to determine if it is a threat.

It’s a good thing that it turned out to be a hoax, and more importantly that they kept searching to make sure that it really was a hoax. I lived in WV for a while, and we had CSX trains coming through all the time.
I can totally see how much of a problem it could be to get something like a bomb on a train. To make it worse, if timed right, it could also create havoc in a station. It’s good to see people doing their jobs.
