The imam charged in connection with a subway bombing plot was sentenced Thursday to time served – and ordered to leave the country.
Ahmad Afzali pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his interactions with the ringleader of the scheme.
“Honest to God, it was never my intention to help those idiots for what they do in the name of Islam,” Afzali told Brooklyn Federal Judge Frederic Block.
He faced up to six months in prison, but will not have to spend any more time in jail.
Under the terms of his plea deal, the Afghan-born imam must leave the U.S. or face deportation.
