Reports in Kuwait on Friday said a man assumed to be Al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi has been captured near the Syrian border. The report claimed that the man was captured during a joint operation by U.S. occupation forces and Iraqi police, Al Siyasah newspaper, quoting Iraqi sources, said Friday.
UPDATE: 07/31/04 Although several overseas papers are reporting this capture, it has not been confirmed by U.S. officials.
We’ve seen several reports such as this before, that have ultimately proved false. However, today, both Al Jazeera and Al Siyasah are reporting the capture of Zarqawi. We will update as the story develops.
