A man who met with two Sept. 11 hijackers before they crashed an American Airlines jet into the Pentagon has been deported from San Diego to Algeria, the Department of Homeland Security said Friday.

Samir Abdoun, 38, was arrested 11 days after the 2001 attacks and convicted of immigration and passport violations and Social Security fraud, according to Homeland Security.

Six commercial airliners in the past four days have had their cockpits illuminated by laser beams while attempting to land, a government official stated Wednesday.

The incidents have happened “all over the place” and in “kind of odd places,” the official said without elaborating.

Colorado: Laser at planes spurs probe

The FBI is investigating reports from two pilots that their cockpits were filled with laser light on approach to the Colorado Springs airport.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin in November warning law enforcement agencies that terrorists have explored using lasers as weapons, but authorities know of no specific terrorist plan to blind airline pilots.

4 detained for filming power plant

Federal authorities have determined four men found videotaping footage near the Limerick nuclear plant were not involved in terrorist activities. Jerri Williams, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Philadelphia, said it appears the four men from Guatemala were making a “tourist video,” highlighting portions of the area that happened to include footage of the Limerick Generating Station.

Williams said authorities determined that three of the men are illegal aliens. They are currently being held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Office in Philadelphia, she said.

FBI Probes Laser Beam Directed at Cockpit

Authorities are investigating a mysterious laser beam that was directed into the cockpit of a commercial jet traveling at more than 8,500 feet.

The beam appeared Monday when the plane was about 15 miles from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the FBI said.

A secret intelligence report has revealed that security chiefs believe al-Qaeda may target New Year celebrations across Britain, The Telegraph has learned.

The document, which has been distributed to every military base in Britain warns that “crowded places or events” are under “a severe threat” of attack from terrorist bombers. The report, which is marked “restricted”, is understood to have been compiled by military intelligence specialists, MI5 and Special Branch officers.

Delta flight from Colombia diverted in Key West

A Delta Air Lines passenger jet from Colombia was diverted Sunday to a Navy station in the Florida Keys because a passenger was on a federal watch list, the FBI said.

The passenger was removed from the plane at U.S. Navy’s Boca Chica airfield just north of Key West at about 1:30 p.m., said FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela. The passenger’s luggage was also removed, then the flight continued to it’s original destination of Atlanta.
