Australian authorities foiled what they believed to be a large-scale terrorist attack, arresting 15 people during raids in the country’s two biggest cities of Sydney and Melbourne, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported on Tuesday.

Intelligence agencies have received specific information about a terrorist threat to Australia which today prompted the Government to rush through its anti-terror laws to help avert a possible attack.

Australia: Terror amendment rushed into parliament

An amendment to Australia’s anti-terror laws making it easier to prosecute people thought to be planning a terrorist attack has been rushed into parliament.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock introduced the law on Wednesday afternoon following specific information about a potential terrorist threat in Australia.

The government hopes to have the amendment passed by the House of Representatives by Wednesday night and the Senate has been recalled on Thursday to vote on the bill.
