Three Algerians arrested in an anti-terrorist operation in southern Italy are suspected of being linked to a planned new series of attacks in the United States, Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said on Friday.

The attacks would have targeted ships, stadiums or railway stations in a bid to outdo the September 11, 2001 strikes by Al-Qaeda in New York and Washington which killed some 2,700 people, Pisanu said.

Gas capsules with timers found in Russian stores

Gas capsules with timers attached were found in stores in Saint Petersburg, the Russian city where dozens of people fell ill after inhaling an unknown gas that spread through a store, officials said.

“The devices that were discovered consisted of capsules of gas with a strong garlicky smell. Clocks set to the current time were attached,” a spokesman for the Federal Security Service in Saint Petersburg told AFP on Monday.

Al Qaeda Targeted Bush

Before he was captured last spring, Osama Bin Laden’s top operational commander was solely focused on killing President Bush and Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharaff, the Daily News has learned.

The capture last May of Al Qaeda’s No. 3 leader, Abu Faraj Al-Libi, apparently thwarted plots to assassinate the two partners in the global war on terror, said a senior Pakistani official, whose information was corroborated by two senior U.S. counterterrorism officials.

Schools Close After 70 Poisoned in Russia

Authorities closed schools in part of Russia’s Chechnya region Wednesday after a mysterious poisoning sickened at least 70 people, most of them schoolchildren, officials said.

Schools in the area will be closed until further notice, said Sergei Kozhemyaka of the southern branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Medical workers from Moscow have been taking blood samples trying to establish the cause of the illness. Among the theories is poisoning from a type of nerve gas.

Federal Investigators Probe High-Tech Explosives Theft

About 400 pounds of explosive material was stolen from a research facility in New Mexico, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed today. The theft was discovered Sunday night by local authorities.

ATF agents are investigating the large theft from Cherry Enginering, a company owned by Chris Cherry, for decades the senior explosives scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico.

Also, 2,500 detonators were missing from a storage explosive container, or magazine, in the name of Cherry Engineering.

The theft is one of the largest reported cases from a facility in the United States in the last decade ending 2004. During that time, a total of about 1,000 pounds was reported stolen from government facilities in 14 reported incidents. It is unknown whether there is any connection to terrorism.

Terror threat to ‘crowded areas’

Scotland Yard has issued a nationwide alert that Islamist terrorist cells may be plotting a Christmas bombing campaign.

The warning was distributed to police chiefs nine days ago by the Yards anti-terrorist branch. It follows a series of operations by police and MI5 aimed at disrupting possible attacks by terrorists linked to Al-Qaeda.

White House would not confirm the death of the American security consultant

The Islamic Army in Iraq reported on the Internet Thursday, Dec. 8, it had killed 40-year old Ronald Schulz, an industrial electrician from Anchorage, Alaska, because America had not met its demands. The statement could not be verified and was not accompanied by pictures or video.

Shoe Bomber Alert Preceded Airport Shooting

Federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News they had been on the alert for a possible shoe bomber when a federal air marshal opened fire at the Miami International Airport today.

In today’s incident, an agitated passenger claimed to have a bomb in his backpack was shot and killed by a federal air marshal, officials said. No bomb was found.
