The New York Times said Wednesday it had received a second envelope with a suspicious white powder and a stamp with a Sept. 11 image, just weeks after a similar incident raised fears of an anthrax attack.
The substance was discovered by a mail room worker Monday and city authorities have determined that it was “nonhazardous,” said Times spokeswoman Abbe Ruttenberg Serphos.
The handwritten envelope was addressed to the newspaper, not an individual, had a postmark from St. Louis and no return address, Serphos said. It contained a blank piece of paper.
On the back of the envelope was a stamp with an image of three city firefighters on Sept. 11 raising a U.S. flag that read on the bottom, “Freedom is not Free,” a Times security official said.
