Barely four days after a letter was discovered at Tiruchirapalli airport warning of al-Qaeda’s plans to attack airports in the south, the US intelligence agency FBI has alerted the airports here to guard against al-Qaeda’s designs to unleash terror on outbound international flights.

Confirming this, a top official of the CISF, which looks after security at all major airports along with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), said the FBI alert had been taken note of and surveillance stepped up at the airports, particularly those handling international flights. “Our security systems are in place,” assured the official.

Among the security measures taken in view of the heightened threat are stricter baggage checks including a secondary check at boarding gates, ladder point check and frisking by the airlines, tighter perimeter security including scanning of vehicles coming into the airport and sanitising of parking lots, as well as stricter access control.

Passengers have also been advised to report early at airports to avoid any delays on account of the additional security checks. However, the agencies are not yet confirming any link between the letter found at the Tiruchirapalli airport and the FBI alert.
