Eight months after British authorities broke up what they say was a plot to blow up airliners headed to the U.S., the alert level for air travel remains at orange.
The reason, according to Bush administration officials: the threat’s still there. A Homeland Security Department official says it would be premature to lower the threat level for air travel, because planning for attacks continues to go on.
The plot allegedly had terrorists planning to make bombs onboard aircraft from small amounts of liquids or gels. Initially, the Transportation Security Administration responded by barring all liquids from carry-on luggage. Since then, the rules have been relaxed and passengers may carry small amounts in a clear, quart-size zip-top plastic bag.
