An Australian TV show staged a fake motorcade, which included a person dressed as Osama Bin Laden, near President Bush’s Sydney hotel. The group slipped past two checkpoints before being detained.
President Bush is just one of many foreign leaders who are in town for this week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. But despite the heavy police presence, actors from an Australian TV show managed to drive a fake motorcade through two checkpoints and get within yards of the hotel that houses Bush and his staff.
When officers finally stopped the motorcade, which was traveling under the Canadian flag, an actor dressed like Osama bin Laden hopped out of the limousine and into the arms of police.
“A lot of people were involved in this stunt,” actor Chris Taylor tells Australian Broadcasting Corp. “We just thought Canada would be a country the cops wouldn’t scrutinize too closely.”
All told, 11 people from The Chaser’s War on Everything were charged with entering a restricted area without permission. They were released on bail after agreeing to stay away from the summit for the rest of the week.
A little while later, their employers at ABC issued a statement that says the satirists never intended to enter a secure zone.
