St. Johns Queens College Campus – Man Wearing Mask and Carrying Rifle In Custody

One person carrying a rifle in a bag was arrested on the St. John’s Queens campus Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The man appeared to be wearing a President Bush mask, according to preliminary information from law enforcement officials.

Authorities asked students and faculty across the campus to stay indoors. There was a large police presence on the campus. Areas near the site of the man’s apprehension have been locked down.

Police said they were possibly looking for more suspects.

The St. John’s University Web site issued this advisory:

“A male with a rifle in a bag was apprehended on St. John’s Queens campus today. Public Safety officers quickly disarmed the suspect and have turned him over to NYPD. Additional information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.”

<blockquote>UPDATE: Police sources said the man is a student of Guyanese descent who lived in a campus dorm. Sources said the student takes medicines for psychiatric issues and that police were investigating whether he had gone off his meds. They believe the student was acting alone. They were searching a dorm for clues, according to sources.

UPDATE: Additional sources are disputing the mask, saying it was a Michael Myer’s “Halloween” mask, NOT a mask of president George Bush.
