A possible “Columbine-type” attack by a non-student was thwarted in Plymouth Meeting, PA today, officials said.

Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor said the 14-year-old youth, had a 9mm semi-automatic rifle purchased by his mother but did not have any ammunition for the weapon.

The teen, who authorities said had felt bullied, was taken into custody after police raided his home in the Philadelphia suburbs on Wednesday evening. He had talked about mounting an attack on Plymouth Whitemarsh High School similar to the 1999 massacre at Colorado’s Columbine High School, authorities said. In that incident, two disgruntled teens Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves.

District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. said at a news conference,”I do not think an attack was imminent and I am not certain that an attack was going to occur at all,” “It could have simply been big talking by a kid who thought that he was bullied previously and he was going to exact his revenge.”

The teen was charged as a juvenile with solicitation to commit terror and other counts and was being held at a youth facility. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The identify of the youth was not disclosed because he is a juvenile. Castor said he is considering charging the 14-year-old as an adult. The mother may also be charged, he said. The mother legally purchased the gun at a gun show, specifically for her son, said Castor. The gun has a laser sight.

Police also seized 30 air-powered weapons, which fire BB pellets and three homemade hand grenades.

Videos of the Columbine shooting, and violence-filled notebooks at the boy’s home were also found.

Among the other items seized were the Anarchist’s Cook Book and a U.S. Army’s counter-insurgency operation hand book. Also taken were about a half-dozen DVDs, including one entitled “Game Over in Littleton,” where Columbine High School is located.

“Police are confident that the incident is isolated to this individual and no threat to the school and/or students exists,” says a statement on the Colonial School District’s website .

I am torn on this. Why?
    1. If this boy was going to do something illegal, I am glad that he was stopped (but since I cannot forsee the future, I really do not know what he had planned.)
    2. He had only 1 real firearm (ATF definition) the rest (30 of them) were air powered guns. From the pictures I have seen, many of the 30 are what is called airsoft. They launch with air a plastic 6mm ball. These are a replacement for paintball and are not capable of killing anything short of a insect. If having toy guns is now illegal, and having books that are controversal are illegal, then the U.S.A. and the constitution, and our legal system are in dire straits.

Got something to say?
