If the reporter learned of the matter on his/her own, there is little which can be done. If some leaked the story to them there may be an infraction of the law. Such an infraction would have been commited not by the person working in the media but by the person who shared the story with the reporter. Each and every agency has rules, laws and/or provisions to deal with unauthorized disclosures. Further , in order to control the damage done we could say and act as though we just learned of the matter, therefore not tipping our hand about information or tactics we have learned of. Begining a sloppy and noticeable investigation for a couple months then dropping the obvious methodes could even bring the target back to his usual routine.

The Constitution gives us freedom of speech but it doesn’t give us the right to commit treason by giving away secret information. It not only could put our undercover investigators in danger, It could put our whole country in danger of attack by terrorists. We have got to understand we are at war and, as the WWII poster says, “Loose lips sink ships”. Those journalists who reveal secrets should be tried for treason.

T-R-E-A-S-O-N ! Why are actions like this tolerated? During WW2 these people would have been publicly condemed and prosecuted !
