Police shut down Interstate 35 Thursday afternoon after a car collided with an 18-wheeler and officers found “suspicious” bags in the driver’s car, according to a police report.
The city’s bomb squad, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Joint Terrorism Task Force and Immigration and Customs Enforcement also responded. Explosives were not found, authorities said.
The car’s driver was charged with fraudulent use or possession of identification, a felony offense, and resisting arrest, a Class-A misdemeanor. He was released from jail early Friday morning on $20,000 bond.
When EMS and firefighters arrived at the crash site, on I-35 near New Laredo Highway, about 2:30 p.m., the driver refused to get out of his car and brandished a knife, according to a police report. Authorities then noticed the bags in the back seat and called the federal agencies.
The FBI also questioned the driver, the report said.
