The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has been put on heightened alert following a blast at the Glorietta 2 shopping center that killed eight people and injured 119 others.

“Even while investigation of the blast is in progress, we have increased the alert level at the NAIA as a precautionary measure. We do not want to be complacent,” said Alfonso Cusi, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and chairman of the Airport Security Center.

Effective 2 p.m. today, the NAIA was put on heightened security alert status. The MIAA has ordered the organic Airport Police Department and all other security personnel to undertake more frequent patrols of the aircraft Movement Arena, increase their visibility outside the terminal areas and intensify intelligence and monitoring tasks within the NAIA complex.

The MIAA Intelligence and Investigation Division, on the other hand, will intensify the gathering of intelligence information critical to safeguarding safety and security of the NAIA complex.

Together with the Airport Police Department, the Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group will undertake K-9 patrols at parking areas in the NAIA complex, increase the visibility of its Mobile Police Security Unit and intensify intelligence and  monitoring of the airport complex.Source
