A suspicious package has caused the evacuation of the airport’s screening area, which has led to a delay of all outbound flights from the airport. Inbound flights are being allowed to land. The incident began at around 3 p.m.
UPDATE: Dulles Airport officials have sounded the all-clear after the ticketing and security screening areas were evacuated because of a suspicious bag.
Airports Authority spokeswoman Courtney Prebich said upper level of the Washington area’s busiest airport was evacuated shortly after 3 p.m. while security guards examined the piece of luggage. Security screeners have determined the bag is safe and airport employees have been allowed back inside.
The suspicious bag was found at a security checkpoint. Prebich said she doesn’t know what was in the bag or what alerted security personnel to evacuate the area. She said evacuations like that are rare.
