An odd letter today prompted biohazard precautions at the 30th Medical Group Clinic on Vandenberg Air Force Base, forcing closure of the facility and quarantine of those inside.

The incident began about 8 a.m., when an employee on the building’s fourth floor opened a letter that had “random writing discussing a variety of biohazard topics.”

Two hours later, authorities determined the letter contained only words, not hazardous substances, and resumed operations.

“The letter was examined and determined to be of a benign nature,” base officials said.
