Two schools were evacuated Monday morning after ammunition was found at Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School, officials said in a statement. It is not immediately clear whether there was evidence of a specific threat to the schools, staff or students.
Police, however, said in the statement they are offering a $1,000 reward through Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest.
Both the junior and high schools in the PBL district were placed on lockdown, officials said, adding that the doors to two elementary schools in the area also were locked as a precaution. All high school extracurricular activities are canceled today; junior high activities continued on schedule, but with a police presence.
Police remained at the school Monday afternoon, but the evacuation by then was largely complete, said a district staffer who answered the phone. Both buildings have been searched and will be swept again by police prior to the resumption of classes Tuesday morning.
The high school has about 450 students. Just over 350 attend the junior high. The schools draw students from five area counties.
Local and county police, along with troopers from District 21, responded. The incident remains under investigation.
