According to the FBI, a call was made to a campus office at 10:30 a.m. to say there was a bomb planted at the Medical School. A short time later, a suspicious device, which the FBI has refused to describe, was discovered in a laboratory.

Several buildings were immediately evacuated. Bomb experts from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are on standby, making sure everyone has been evacuated before they start their work. Once given the go-ahead, the bomb experts will take an X-ray photograph of the device, bring that X-ray outside to analyze, and then decide how to disarm it.

A doctorate student told NBC 7/39 an e-mail was sent out Tuesday night urging students to be cautious because the lab had received threats, allegedly over animal experimentation. The FBI would not confirm that information, butstudents said police were swarming around the building at 8 a.m.

The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, San Diego Police Department and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are all involved in the investigation.

Officials said they do not know when the buildings will be reopened.
