To somewhat quote from Mark Twain, “the rumors of al Qaedas death may have been greatly exaggerated”.

Over the past few weeks, various news reports have eluded to al Qaeda being finished in Iraq, packing up and heading for parts unknown. While overall there is little doubt that things are getting better, the one lesson we must always remember is to never underestimate the conviction, ingenuity and resolve of our enemies.

Al-Qaeda unleashed a new bombing campaign across Iraq, 26 people were killed on Friday in two separate bomb explosions in the restive Diyala province.

Most of the dead were members of the Awakening Councils, militias that have backed U.S. forces and the Iraqi government in their efforts to reclaim Iraqi provinces from al-Qaeda.

A woman suicide bomber killed 16 people and wounded 27 in the town of Muqdadiyah near Baquba, followed hours after by a car bomb explosion killing 10 people in a town north of Baquba, police official Major Ibrahim Hassan said.

The driver detonated his explosives when guards at a checkpoint began to search the car, killing seven Iraqi soldiers and three members of a local anti-al-Qaeda group, officials told the AP.

The woman suicide bomber, wearing a vest packed with explosives, blew herself up at the office of a local Sunni Arab anti-al-Qaeda militia, killing 10 members of the group at 9.30 a.m. local time. She was once a member of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party, according to the police.

This is the second such attack this year in the town of Muqdadiyah, after a woman suicide bomber killed more than a dozen people when she walked into a crowd at a police recruitment center in April.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military in Iraq detained 55 suspected militants in two raids targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq network north of Baghdad.
