New Zealand - Suspicious Envelopes Marked ‘Anthrax’ Sent To Two Media Outlets

December 9, 2007

Two media organizations in Auckland received suspicious mail this morning claiming to contain anthrax, police say.

Auckland City police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said envelopes were received by TVNZ and Greenstone Pictures in Mt Eden.

The envelopes had notes in them saying “anthrax” and contained some powder, Hegarty said.

Police were now asking all other media outlets to report anything suspicious.

“Because of the fact that they were both media we thought we needed to just see if there was anything else out there that was causing concern to other media outlets,” she told NZPA.

It was not yet known whether the powder in the envelopes was anything dangerous, but there had been no physical reaction by those who came into contact with the mail, she said.

The bomb disposal unit was in attendance.

“They have a little device with them that can determine whether or not a substance is anthrax, but it can’t tell you what it is if it isn’t anthrax,” she said.

“Once they’ve gone through that process and it is determined not to be anthrax then it is packaged up and sent to ESR in Wellington for testing.”
