A county hazardous materials team was sent Thursday to a commercial building in Lakewood after one person reported feeling ill. A suspicious package was found in the mailroom of the AARP building and the building was evacuated shortly after 8 a.m.
The suspicious package, a letter containing a white powdery substance, was the third this year sent to the AARP building on the 3200 block of E. Carson Street, said AARP spokeswoman Charee Gillins.
The letter was found on the second floor, where mail is processed, Gillins said.
“We process a ton of mail in this building, so it’s not uncommon to come across the unexpected,” she said.
Police suspect a malicious prankster may be at work because they have responded a couple times to the building for similar incidents, Berg said.
Inspector Frank Garrido said paramedics already treated one person at the scene. The problem was isolated to the mailroom. The investigation is ongoing.
