A Dallas middle school remained in modified lockdown Thursday afternoon after police responded to a report of a man walking in the area with a sword.

William Hawley Atwell Law Academy in the 1300 block of Reynoldston Lane was placed under a lockdown at about noon.

Dallas police said officers searched the area but could not locate the man.

Principal Harnell Williams said that the school remained in modified lockdown at about 2:30 p.m. and that people were not allowed in or out of the building. She said it was unclear whether the lockdown would be lifted in time for the students’ scheduled release at 3:30 p.m.

Mrs. Williams said the students were safe and that parents would be notified if there was a change in the students’ release time.

Dallas police said they would maintain an extra presence in the area until students were released.

Nearby Adelle Turner Elementary School in the 5500 block of South Polk Street was also placed under a lockdown this afternoon, police said. A person at the school said students were being released to parents this afternoon.
