Deputies in Arcadia traced cell phone signals to find and arrest a man they say left a suspicious package on a public bus and then phoned in fake bomb threats.

Sheriff’s Lieutenant Keith Olberger says the suspect started calling authorities at around 9:45 this morning to say there was going to be a bomb on a particular bus.

A bomb squad rushed to where the bus was stopped at Baldwin Avenue and Las Tunas Drive after the bus’ driver found the parcel the suspect described.

Deputies evacuated nearby homes and businesses and detonated the package. Olberger says they determined that the package had contained only “miscellaneous papers.”

The suspect kept calling in threats after the package had been blown up and deputies used a cell signal from those calls to track him down.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was booked on suspicion of making terrorist threats and false reporting of a bomb.
