A security guard, who was working for a company contracted to maintain order at toll booths at the Paso del Norte Bridge, was killed Tuesday, marking the city’s first homicide of the year, police said.
As of Tuesday night, police officers were still investigating the details of the case, and said they had limited information on the incident.
Officers did say that at about 5:30 p.m. a male pedestrian, who was crossing into Juárez, had a confrontation with the security guard. Officials were unable to pinpoint what caused the confrontation.
“We know that (the security guard) was physically assaulted but we are still trying to determine what injuries were received and what inflicted those injuries,” police spokesman Officer Chris Mears said Tuesday night.
A man was detained at the scene and witnesses are being interviewed, according to police. The names and ages of the two men were not released Tuesday night.
The security guard was taken to Thomason Hospital where he later died. Both men are believed to be from El Paso.
