Suspicious Device Prompts Hangar Evacuation At Orlando International Airport

Â A Continental Airlines hanger at Orlando International Airport was evacuated Monday night after a suspicious device was spotted on a curb in a nearby parking lot.

A police officer on a routine patrol spotted the device just off Tradeport Drive at about 7:30 p.m.

Homeland Security officials, sheriff’s deputies and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms responded to the scene.

A witness said the device looked like a pipe bomb but authorities were not able to determine whether or not the device was a live explosive.

Officials said they decided the unknown device was an apparent risk and destroyed it, Local 6 reported.

“At this point and time, in this day and age, when there is something lying in a parking lot that doesn’t look like it is supposed to be there, it is classified as suspicious,” Orlando Fire Chief Greg Hoggatt said.

There were no reported injuries and no interruptions of flight service at Orlando International Airport.

Nearby Tradeport Drive was closed because of the discovery but was reopened to traffic after the device was destroyed.
