A group of six men opened fire with automatic weapons here Friday on the Israeli embassy in Mauritania, wounding five people including a “foreign woman,”.
The attack took place shortly after 2 a.m. (0200 GMT), witness Ali Fall said.
Bismuth said the building was empty at the time of the attack, which took place shortly after 2 a.m. (0200 GMT), according to witness Ali Fall.
Six men wearing boubous long flowing African gowns and turbans “got out of a vehicle and walked towards a restaurant near the embassy,” said Fall, a client of the restaurant.
After a few minutes “they said loudly in Arabic ‘let’s go’ then shouted ‘Allah Akbar’ [God is Great] and opened fire” at the embassy, he said.
The embassy guards Mauritanian soldiers immediately returned fire and the assailants quickly fled, he said.
