UPDATE: It is being reported that there are 6 confirmed deaths in the shooting including 2 police officers, the Mayor and the gunman.
A correspondent for the Post-Dispatch who was attending said the 7 p.m. meeting had just started when the man rushed into the council chambers yelling and began opening fire with at least one weapon. She identified the man as Charles Lee “Cookie” Thornton.
“He came from the back of the room,” said Janet McNichols, the correspondent. “He kept yelling ‘shoot the mayor’ and he just walked around shooting anybody he could.”
McNichols said the shooter first fired at a police officer at the meeting, then began firing at the council. As people went to the floor, the shooter walked toward the council area.
He fired at the city attorney, who fended the attacker off by throwing chairs, McNichols said. The shooter went behind a curved desk where the council sits and fired more shots at members of the council, she said.

Got something to say?

I’m interested in hearing about the man’s history with the city prior to this incedent. What were the relationships with the city members? Why did he shout that he wanted justice?
This is a form of domestic terrorism so what occured to bring the man to the brink where he did this. All I have heard is that he had continual issues with city code but that does not seem to work for the senario. We must study the situation leading up to the tragedy . It seems that there is something missing here
Just to show that were going to have have better security at meetings such as these, like metal detectors etc. SO we don’t have another incident as this one…
I think there should be an investigation to find out the issues that lead to the shooting at the council meeting. The public need to know if where were problems in the community where the shooter lived. In accordance with the media the shooter was a successful busines owner which means he had to be giving or doing something meanful in the community where he lived. There is more to the story.
I also think that there are alot of things that aren’t being said. Something drove him over the edge!
