From The Grand Forks Herald
The Grand Forks Regional Bomb Squad was called out tonight to investigate a vehicle damaged by an explosion just north of Grand Forks Air Force Base.
The Emerado Police Department received a report at about 4 p.m. from a passing motorist who saw the burned out vehicle on a gravel road just west of County Road 3 in Mekinock Township.
Emerado police chief Tim Gillespie would not say if anyone was in the vehicle when it exploded or if anyone was injured, but did say that the vehicle’s owners had been contacted.
Staff Sergeant James Croxon, a public affairs representative with Grand Forks Air Force Base said a man was transported to Altru Health System for treatment for what he had been told were non-life-threatening burns.
Croxon said the unidentified man is not a member of the military and it’s unclear if he is a relative of a member of the base.
Croxon said the explosion was not a threat to the base and did not affect any operations at the base.
A state patrol car blocked off the scene and a fire rescue team was waiting nearby tonight.
Grand Forks Sheriff’s Deputy Andy Schneider said at the scene that propane tanks were visible inside the vehicle.
“It’s obvious there was an explosion,” he said.

As a former volunteer firefighter: I would suggest a warning sign be posted where propane is sold — “Do Not light your cigarette in a van or SUV while transporting a freshly filled propane cylinder = the smaller the leak, the more dangerous the Hazzard”… An old tank valve will leak it is a problem requiring a regular replacement…
