Part of the city of Kerrville was shut down Friday after a suspicious package was found.

The package was found under a bench in the 900 block of Junction Highway in the River Oak Shopping Center area. Around 10:00 a.m., a nearby resident told a postal worker about the box, which was addressed to two judges out of Washington D.C. and may have been there for days. Kerrville police were then called to investigate.

“Once I looked at the box and the envelope, they backed away from the situation and cordoned off the area,” Officer Martinez told News 4.

Officers then evacuated the entire block, including the shopping center and a nearby apartment complex.

A team from Lackland Explosive Ordnance Disposal were called to the scene. They first used a robot to examine the package and then opened up a box as people stood at a distance and watched.

“It was a box that was taped closed with an envelope on top that, that was taped to box with the addresses on there,” said Officer Norma Martinez of the Kerrville Police Department.

Officials have not released any information about what was found inside the package, but News 4 cameras caught what appeared to be clothes and a pink blanket. Everything was then bagged, and residents were finally allowed to return home.

The Kerrville Police Department is now investigating to try to find out who sent the package and how long it was sitting here.
