The Peoria bomb squad was called out to the 2300 block of South Oregon street Wednesday night after neighbors found a grenade in the street.

Police said the grenade had been modified and they were not sure if it was able to be detonated.

The bomb squad used a robot to place the grenade in a bomb-proof box to be detonated in a safe place.

Lieutenant Dave Roger said even if the grenade was a dud, they still would not take a chance.

“You’re only allowed one mistake in this line of work, and we try not to make that mistake,” Roger said. “We take all precautions and treat every device like a live device.”

Police blocked off several streets as they removed the grenade from the area.
