Jupiter Florida - A 21-year-old Tequesta man rode a bus with more than 50 Jupiter Middle School students Wednesday, all the while boasting to the children that he was carrying a switchblade knife and a chemical bomb, according to school officials and parents.
Police and school district officials are wondering why the bus driver let him on board and how to make sure the scenario is never repeated.
Jupiter Middle School officials met with parents Friday to address their concerns.
According to the school district, the man first attempted to board the bus Tuesday but was denied access by the driver. He returned Wednesday, insisting he wanted to register for school. When the same driver peppered him with questions, he answered well enough to persuade the driver to let him board, district spokesman Nat Harrington said Friday.
The man, a Palm Beach County public school graduate, rode to school with 51 students, Harrington said. Along the way, the driver grew concerned.
“It was clear to her he was having conversations with students that were making them uncomfortable,” he said.
When they arrived at Jupiter Middle, the driver alerted an administrator, who cornered the man and kept him isolated until school police arrived. Harrington said the man was taken to his father’s home and released to his father’s custody.
The man showed up at the bus stop again Thursday. But before the bus arrived, someone called authorities and police persuaded the man to seek medical attention, Harrington said.
School police are investigating the incident.
The bus driver is no longer driving that route, Harrington said, adding that “things were done as they were supposed to be done.”
