A federal report outlines issues faced during a national terrorism exercise in which authorities pretended “dirty bombs” had gone off. The report says officials had problems working with radiation experts and relaying damage reports to the public.

The report also highlights some strengths during the exercise, such as quick responses to the mock explosions, sharing of information among agencies and helping special-needs populations like the elderly.

Department of Homeland Security officials met today for a closed-door conference with state and local emergency responders to discuss the preliminary results of the exercise last fall.

The exercise simulated terror attacks involving mock dirty bombs in Phoenix, Portland, Oregon; and Guam. It involved more than 23,000 federal, state, local and private participants.

NationalTerrorAlert.com was fortunate to have been on-site during the Phoenix drill. For additional info please read our post from October of last year.
