Police say an equipment case containing low-level radioactive material that was stolen from a car this week has been found in the doorway of a school in Madrid.

A police spokeswoman says the case was unopened and there were no signs of radioactivity in the area.

She says the case was returned to its owners Thursday.

Police had been notified by a passer-by of the cases whereabouts.

The Nuclear Safety Council had issued an alert after the equipment used to measure the density and humidity of soil was stolen on Tuesday.

The council had said the equipment posed no radiological risk as long as the case was kept closed.
