Kokomo Emergency responders from Howard and Tipton counties were mobilized late Wednesday after receiving many calls about a large explosion.

Dozens of residents reported hearing, feeling or seeing some kind of explosion near Kokomo about 10:30 p.m., but about midnight, a Tipton County Sheriff’s Department dispatch official said police and fire crews still were searching for debris or other evidence of a blast.

One resident interviewed on the air by WTHR (Channel 13), The Indianapolis Star’s news-gathering partner, said she felt her house shake violently and saw a fireball.

Other witness accounts varied from a blast to bright lights to a house-shaking rumble, officials said.

About 11:30 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration reported no missing aircraft, WTHR reported.

Kokomo, home to about 46,000 people, is about 50 miles north of Indianapolis in Howard County.

Police are still not sure what caused a bright light in the sky followed by a loud explosion near the Tipton-Howard County line.

Several residents called police and news outlets saying that they had seen the lights and/or had experienced what felt like a large explosion as far away as Kokomo.

Police think that it may have resulted from military flares or even an astronomical event.

“With the reports of sparks things falling from the sky, our aviation section reported that a meteor shower activity over the last couple of nights. We had a similar instance in Logansport yesterday with a loud bang that I believe that they had classified as a meteor shower. So to our best guess tonight Mother Nature has created this big incident,” said Sgt. Jeremy Kelly, Indiana State Police.

“I think it rocked everybody’s house and I am scared for everybody. I don’t know if it was a meteorite or if it was a plane or if it was jet going over from Grissom, it could have been numerous things,” said Jodi Brown from Kokomo.

Initial reports brought countless police, fire and rescue units to an area near the intersection of U.S. 31 and 300 North in Tipton County. But, after finding nothing while searching that area, the search began moving west and north back into Howard County.

Units responding included sheriff deputies from Howard and Tipton counties, Kokomo and Tipton city police, Indiana State Police, Howard County Emergency Management Agency and fire departments from Harrison and Taylor townships, Sharpsville and Kempton.

After nearly an hour of searching, however, no debris of any sort had been found. Authorities at Grissom Air Reserve Base and Indianapolis International Airport were contacted, but they told police they had no aircraft missing.

Police believe it is possible that the boom and lights may have been caused by a meteor or other atmospheric disturbance. Immediately after the boom, there was a slight metallic smell in the air in downtown Kokomo.

Aliens, its aliens!!! One big boom then a bunch of flashing lights in the sky, if it was a meteroite it would have been the other way around! The only way to explain it was that there was a small ufo that had crashed and then a bigger ufo (the flashing lights) took the pieces of wreckage and took off. It’s the only explanation that makes since and I don’t even believe in aliens all that much. If it really is a meteroite then that hole in the O-zone that everyone’s talking about is apparently right above Indiana.

    Thomas Writes:
Another event like this is sure to send hundreds of thousands in a frantic search for their Bibles - blowing the dust off - and - searching through Revelation’s prophesies *** just in case it was mentioned in there.

On the other hand - maybe it was just someone setting off one of those big sonic firecrackers we see feel and hear at sporting events.

I live in Chicago and heard a huge boom, maybe after 11:00 PM. At first, I thought it was a huge gas explosion, but then I heard no sirens.
It’s ironic that it happened here as well, but no one has mentioned it. Maybe these F-16s were chasing something.

I am pasting a link above to photos taken here in central Indiana the night that this incident happened. Also–i’m pasting a single response on a forum that gave Hoosiers a chance to speak out and converse about what they saw. That forum for those who are interested can be found at wishtv.com. Type mysterious boom in the search bar, then go to comments at the bottom of the article. More comments can be found by clicking forum…there are more than 200 by central hoosiers. There is so much that has not been reported, and many of us wonder why. Today, there are Apache helicopters on the south side of Indy, 3 in total. Flying somewhere in the area to 500-1000 ft.
Quote below is from “free thinking american” as stated on the forum above listed.

So far, no one is mentioning why Home Land Security was involved, according to the police who are willing to say so; no one is talking about the military vehicles (trucks)who were seen on hwy 31 around 300W today. Everyone around here has heard sonic booms. But has anyone ever heard of a sonic boom that had citizens so disrupted, that at last count 4-5 emergency units, from fire to EMT..state police, police from 2 counties were dispatched? Why police after the matter (only 2 hours later) were not talking about what information there was available to the public? Why radio stations totally went silent(less than 2 hours later)on the matter and stopped broadcasting any information from the public about last night? People ARE guilty of buying so much of what they are told. But its wise to question what has not been answered–and then keep a watch out on the night skies–and for each other. Take care of your neighbors-you never know when you’ll need them

It was air force jets breaking the sound barrier, and the “mysterious lights”, were flares dropped from air force planes, in an “exercise”.
At least thats what the air force said about the incident.
It also said that the pilots who exceded mach speed, would be chastised or reprimanded or some such nonsense.

I remember a while back that that sometimes when a shift in a fault line occurs this type of flash and explosion can occur. Was there not a earthquake in the area a few days later?

Do a search for Flash on website.
