Police Thursday were investigating letters containing an unknown but harmless powdery substance that were sent to about half a dozen elected officials, including Chicago aldermen.
The letters arrived Thursday afternoon, and Chicago Fire Department personnel were called to test a powdery material inside them, spokesman Larry Langford said. The calls came from offices at the Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St., as well as several aldermanic offices, he said.
“In each case, the substance turned out to be absolutely benign,” Langford said. He said the substance was turned over to police.
Chicago police and a joint terrorism task force were investigating the origin of the letters, Officer JoAnn Taylor said.
“At this time there is no reason to believe there is a credible threat,” Taylor said. She would not specify which elected officials received the letters.
