The FBI is working with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office to investigate who sent a white powdered substance, initially feared to be anthrax, to an East Milton man.
The man received a letter and the substance in the mail Thursday. The letter sparked a comprehensive emergency response by county, local and state public safety departments.
The substance turned out to be a polyethylene polymer, a substance used to make plastic items.
Special Agent Jeff Westcott, spokesman at the FBI’s Jacksonville office, said those responsible for mailing the substance could face federal charges.
“It depends on the intent of the person who sent it,” Westcott said. “We take these matters very seriously, and people need to be aware that this is not an appropriate way to joke around.”
