A former inmate in a California state prison who became part of a domestic terrorist cell that planned to attack United States military operations, “infidels,” and Israeli and Jewish facilities in the Los Angeles area was sentenced Monday morning to 22 years in federal prison.
Levar Haney Washington, 30, who was recruited into the terrorist cell while in state prison and subsequently recruited others into the plot, was sentenced by United States District Judge Cormac J. Carney.
Washington pleaded guilty on Dec. 14 to being part of a domestic terrorist cell that sought to finance its operation through a string of gas station robberies.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to levy war against the United States through terrorism and conspiracy to possess a firearm.
Washington and Kevin James, who founded the group while in a California state prison and also pleaded guilty, were among four men indicted in 2005 for what authorities said was a plot to attack U.S. military facilities, Israeli government offices and synagogues in the Los Angeles area.
James, 31, is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 23, when he’ll face up to 20 years in prison.
Gregory Patterson of Inglewood, a college student who also pleaded guilty, faces sentencing on July 9.
The fourth man, Hammad Samana, also of Inglewood, was declared incompetent to stand trial and confined to a hospital, but he now is due back in court on Aug. 25 for a status conference.
All but Samana are U.S. citizens. Samana is a legal U.S. resident from Pakistan.
Authorities say the defendants were members of a radical Islamic organization known as Jam’iyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh, which was run by James while incarcerated at California State Prison-Sacramento.
James admitted during his court appearance that he founded JIS in prison based on his interpretation of Islam, and that he preached targeting the U.S. government, Israel and Jewish people in retaliation for their policies regarding Muslims.
