Karachi Airport
With terrorists already posing a threat to Karachi for the past few weeks, threatening to attack commercial flights at the airport, provincial ministers as well as diplomats and agencies’ personnel have also been warned of attacks. Investigators had recently revealed that a foreign intelligence agency had become active in the city to stir ethnic riots in the metropolis.
A major potential threat recently conveyed to the Sindh Home Department is the Waziristan-based militants’ plan to attack aircraft operating to and from the Karachi airport.
According to intelligence sources, a letter was dispatched by the federal Interior Ministry to the Sindh Home Department Sindh, wherein it was informed that some militants were present in Kazimabad area, situated at a short distance from Jinnah International Airport, and were planning to target commercial flights.
The recent operation in Khyber Agency has caused disturbances across the country and militants have been threatening the government with attacks on intelligence and ministerial offices as well as embassies and airports. However, the security situation at the airports of the country has been found to be inadequate.
Jinnah Terminal is surrounded by a vast area which is not covered with security surveillance cameras or search lights. Though the airport is used by a number of foreign delegates and VVIPs, security measures do not seem to be adequate in and outside the area.
According to sources, the Kazimabad locality established near the airport is posing a threat, as the landing and taking-off of the aircraft can been easily seen from the area. The Interior Ministry has directed for making thorough checks and taking security measures in this regard. Besides, the consulates and the residences of diplomats in the city are also under threat, as the authorities concerned have ordered extra surveillance at such places throughout the country.
Recently investigators had revealed that some foreign intelligence agencies were active in the city, and were out to destroy the economy of the country by destabilizing Karachi. Recently, an attempt was made to disrupt the peace of Sindh’s capital by creating riots between two ethnic groups with a large presence in Karachi. Seven blasts were carried out in the localities inhibited by a certain ethnic group, but, fortunately, the miscreants failed to achieve their nefarious designs.
