Man Decapitated ‘Beheaded’ Aboard Greyhound Bus – Canada – Updates

A man aboard a Canada Greyhound bus was decapitated after being repeatedly stabbed b y another passenger. Police said Thursday they didn’t know what prompted a passenger on a Greyhound bus heading to Winnipeg to viciously attack the man sitting next to him.
Passengers said the man repeatedly stabbed his seat-mate before beheading him and carrying the victim’s head around the bus.
Shocked passengers described the horrific attack as something incomprehensible.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the man stabbed to death aboard a bus late Wednesday and beheaded, according to witness accounts, but friends have said it was Tim McLean Jr., 22, of Winnipeg. (Tim McLeans MySpace Page)
RCMP announced Friday morning that they have charged Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton with second-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear at the Manitoba provincial court in Portage la Prairie.

One moment, the quiet man near the back of the bus was minding his own business. The man hadn’t talked to anyone around him, and seemed to pay no attention to the younger fellow sitting next to him, who was listening to music on headphones.
The next moment, witnesses said, the older man stood up, still quiet, and repeatedly stabbed, then beheaded his younger victim.
“We heard this blood-curdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly, like 40 or 50 times,” Garnet Caton said Thursday from a hotel in Brandon, Man., where he and other passengers had been taken to rest.
“There was no rage or anything. He was like a robot, stabbing the guy.”
Caton said the bus stopped and everyone scrambled to get out while the attacker started methodically carving up the victim’s body, not paying attention to anyone else.
Caton and the driver shut the bus door from the outside while they waited for police to arrive.
“We put our bodies up against the door, waiting for him to come out … and he went back and brought the head to the front and pretty much displayed it … and dropped it on the ground in front of us,” Caton said.
“All very calmly. He was wearing sunglasses. It was no big deal to him.”
Fellow passenger Cody Olmstead from Kentville, N.S., also recalled the chilling scene.
“The guy came to the front of the door with buddy’s head in his hands, decapitated. He dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body back up,” Olmstead said.

Caton said he heard a “blood-curdling scream” and turned around to see the attacker holding a large “Rambo” hunting knife above the victim, “continually stabbing him in the chest area.”
“He must have stabbed him 50 times or 60 times,” said Caton.
“Like, just everywhere, arms, legs, neck, chest, guts, wherever he could swing it, he got it,” said Olmstead.
“It looked kind of like a scuffle or an argument, you know, and then somebody’s, like, ‘Knife! Knife! Run!’ so I was running up the alleyway, slapping people telling them to get going, move, get off the bus. I got pushed over, some lady got pushed over, I was just making sure everybody was OK, and we all got off the bus,” said Olmstead
As panicked passengers fled the bus, “the attacker was over top of the victim … continually cutting him. I think the victim was gone at that point,” Caton said.

Caton, the driver and a trucker who had stopped at the scene later boarded the vehicle to see if the victim was still alive.
“When we came back on the bus, it was visible at the end of the bus he was cutting the guy’s head off and pretty much gutting him up,” said Caton.
The attacker ran at them, Caton said, and they ran out of the bus, holding the door shut as he tried to slash at the trio.
When the attacker tried to drive the bus away, the driver disabled the vehicle, Caton said.
“While we were watching the door, he calmly walks up to the front with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us,” said Caton.
“They did an awesome thing, holding him in there, because if not, what would have happened?” said Olmstead.

Had I been there I wouldve pulled out my bucknife and slashed the attackers jugular vein before he had the chance to behead his victim. What frustrates me is that this happened in Canada which doesnt have the Death Penalty or Prison Rape for people like this.I also cant understand why the Cops didnt just shoot him DEAD on the spot. Thats what we do here in the U.S.
We are NOT living in the ‘last days’.
BUT this is one of the most heinous, depressing, sickening, awful, tragic, disgusting crimes I have ever read about in my 27 years. A young life just completely desecrated in such a demonic way.
What made this killer tick? I don’t want to know but this is EXACTLY why we need the death penalty. Liberal or conservative. We need to value life. Taking the joy of living from another being is the WORST crime of all.
People watch horror movies like Hostel or films like No Country For Old Men and become desensitized. Normal people can evaluate these films in rational ways but unfortunately VERY DISTURBED individuals watch them too. I say this as someone that works in the entertainment industry.
We can’t let people with dangerous mental illnesses threaten innocent lives in our society, on our road ways, or streets. People like this need to be committed. Their families, authorities, peers, neighbors, co-workers, need to step-up and be responsible for these sick individuals. They need to be in asylums. If they’re not taking their meds, then it is a threat to all of us. Society failed this innocent young 19 year old man.
We NEED compassion, morality and religion. Whether you’re secular, live by the sciences, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, etc. LIFE needs to be protected, respected and valued.
This is a shameful black mark on modern society but this is NOT the last days. We will EVOLVE and continue to evolve as a human race and society. We are not at the end, or even the middle. Human beings have a lot of growing to do. Citizens of the world are doing positive and great things everyday.

My son was travelling Greyhound this past week and the thought of that scares the living daylights out of me. Are we not safe anywhere anymore? We hear about things like this happening in the Middle East, where such a thing seems to be almost common place among fanatics…..but here on the prairies? It’s definately NOT something that happens every day. Heaven help us if it ever does.
I hope this young innocent man did not suffer in the hands of this evil garbage piece

Mike, the passengers didn’t do “nothing” they did save other lives by acting quickly, but I do agree that more could have been done to save the victim. There were more than enough people to overpower him.
To die in such a way is just horrible, I cannot even imagine what his family is going through. Most of these kinds of stories don’t even phase me anymore, but the brutality and gore involved in this one just shocks me. I am 18 and listen to music and keep to my self all the time(like I’m sure most of us do) which makes this hit home.
The death penalty is too good for him, drawn and quartered is the way to go.

Its things like this that i hear about and think wow, if only one of those passengers, was carrying a concealed firearm, how different the out come could have been. I know Canada has banned them and the states would love to… but firearms in the hands of the right people can and would be a huge deterrent, in all the school shootings and in cases like this.. it just makes me angry that this could have soo simply been stopped or prevented.. I’m with mike saying that there were more than enough people to overpower one guy, but can understand the other side about more lives saved.. very simple let upstanding citizens carry a guns and back them up in questionable circumstances when they use them to protect others.

Uhhh, so much for passengers banding together to fight off terrorists. Did I read that right? A guy, with just a KNIFE, clears an ENTIRE bus of travelers? And he was able to stab the victim a mere “50 or 60 times.” And it’s fortunate they all saved themselves, giving the guy enough time to decapitate a human head. Then what do they do? Leave him the bus!? They’re lucky he didn’t take it and run them all over.
There were young children on that bus. What were they all supposed to do, run over the old people and the children in their haste to get to the perp? He was crazy enough to go after a complete stranger, and if he did it because he was psychotic, it’s likely they wouldn’t have been able to subdue him without a lot of other people getting hurt.
Airplane terrorists are just a little bit different–they’ve got enough presence of mind to plan out their terror attacks and they are VERY present when they stand up and announce the hijacking. No problem. Sometimes they can even be reasoned with.
As for the gun thing have you ever *been* on a Greyhound? Reeeally close quarters. God, if someone had had a gun, a lot more than just one young man would have died. Most people who own guns never use them in a situation like that and I’m sorry but going to a range is NOT adequate training for dealing with a crisis situation. I’m thinking again of the little kids. My God. I’m pro-Second Amendment and that is WHY I object to the idea.
And as for the death penalty, if it deters crap like this, explain Texas, with one of the highest murder rates in the United States. Crazy people or really angry people do not care about consequences, they only care about hurting somebody. And if they’re crazy, killing them will be lost on them–they should have been locked up to begin with.

I can not believe what happened! I don’t think the people on the bus could have stopped it, my god he was stabbing him with a huge knife, by time they realized what was happening and got a weapon to fight him, it would have been too late. They did all they could do in that situation. I am sure they will all have nightmares for the rest of there lifes, and to put this on them is just not right! Put yourself in their shoes, what would you have done? Remember the guy had a big knife and you don’t have a weapon. Some are saying that Canadians should be able to have guns – why? I work with the mentally ill and this is definitely a case of a chronic paranoid schizophrenic who obviously was not taking the appropriate medications. It appears he most likely heard voices telling him to do this–he probably carried the knife due to paranoia. I just bet we find out he has a lengthy psychiatric history and past psych hospitalizations. and of course since he is 40, no one can force him to take medication. its unfortunate but sounds like a classic case of severe mental illness/schizophrenia! I believe though that life imprisonment is the answer for this man. psych hospitalization is a temporary fix-once let out these mentally ill people decide not to continue taking meds–thats the problem here! and i bet if authorities dig deeper they will find he comes from a dysfunctional family with histories of mental illness!
My 13-year-old daughter and I just traveled using Greyhound for the first time at the beginning of June; and my son’s best friend (age 19) just used Greyhound to meet up with us on vacation a couple of weeks ago.
I am having nightmares thinking this could have been him . . . or us. I thought it was a pretty okay way to travel, weird but not awful. Don’t think I can see myself ever doing it again after hearing this.
My heart goes out to the young victim’s family. I cannot imagine the horror they are living out.

I live about one hour from the attack and yes, it scares the hell out of me. There are crazy people out there and no matter where in the world you go you’ll find them. This is a tragic event and of course everyone looking back at it says that something could have been done to stop it. The passengers on the bus did try and stop the attack. But what would you do if a possesed crazy person is running at you waving a knife.

Of course you can say you would have donned your superman outfit and saved the day, then flown off to rescue an elderly women from a burning building. But we are not super heroes and no person knows how they will react in such a horrific incident.
By the time the other passengers realized what was happening the victim was already beyond the point of help. Only an American would believe that the solution to a violent act is another more violent act. So many of your comments point out the startling realities in our world. Violence is not a solution but a problem. Americans need to learn this and grow up from their infantile state of throwing a temper tantrum as a solution.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this tragedy. And I truly hope that the passengers of that bus are able to overcome the demons that will haunt their mind, not because of what they didn’t do but because of what they saw.

Is it not somewhat wierd that no one has commented on the two stabbings in a Phoenix mall. Yet everyone comments on this happening in Canada. Probably because violent crime is rare in Canada and a common daily occurence in the glorious United States of America.
Let me tell you this has shaken a lot of people here in Canada, yeah we have our share of nutjobs and violent crime, but this one is really over the top. The guy is obviously mentally ill and having capital punishment is not going to deter this kind of psychotic behavior, electrocute him all you want–people in his condition are not in control of their mind.
I don’t know what the answer is, but I am just sick for the victim’s family and for everyone on that bus who went through this trauma. Hooray & thank you to that bus driver for fighting the natural instinct to “run for the hills” and keep that guy on the bus. A lot of lives were saved that day.

Good god, people, does purse snatching always have to be a crime? Find someone’s purse, wrap the strap around his throat, and strangle away! When it’s your life or his, guess what? Kill that S.O.B. With anything you can find. He wasn’t paying attention to anything but his victim. He was standing up. This means his back was turned to half of the bus. Fourty or so people had an opportunity here. Look around, find a weapon, and kill him. You’ll have an entire bus full of people ready to stand up for you in court if you’re accused of murder. “Save a life” never means “just save your ass”. That’s not the American way, that’s the human way. Living in the US, I am embarassed and ashamed of all the flaming against Canada in these responses. They are our Sisters and Brothers. They lost a life, horribly. I don’t know if the young man could have been saved in time, but his attacker absolutely could have been stopped.

I have a gun permit, and i know people who have had to use the personnal firearm to keep a very bad thing from happening. Just one person with a fire arm could have saved your country alot of money.

Just a comment. I don’t understand why the RCMP didn’t shoot the attacker dead. They knew no one else was on the bus and had many opportunities to do so. Perhaps I don’t understand the law enough, and still question why our legal system makes no sense at all. This is going to cost us law abiding tax payers into the 7 figures as the legal system attempts to prosecute him and to determine what kind of mental illness he has. A person such as this cannot be rehabilitated back into society as a normal person. I’d rather see the 7 figures of tax payers money go to the family of the victim to help them get their lives back on track.

Many Americans have trouble distinguishing fantasy from reality; partly because of too much TV and too little education, and partly because they are caught up in a fantasy world of 2000 year-old magic and miracles from the middle east. Anyone who knows absolutely ANYTHING about guns, knows you check what’s behind your target before you shoot and to top that off, there are bullets called hollow points, which yes do more damage but also, are designed to stop in the body (no exit). Under those circumstances, ( which I cant possibly imagine as I wasn’t there), I have no idea what I would do, it probably took every last effort not to “freeze” on the spot from fear, yet alone run away for your life!.

My condolences to the family and bus passengers! I’m not sure if this helps, but I do know that when your body’s traumatized, you black out early on. I think it’s your body’s way of dealing with pain and shock to protect you from whatever’s happening to you.
NO ONE should judge the passengers – it’s easy to criticize because you weren’t there. Some of the passengers were sleeping when this started. Being quickly awoken from a sound sleep, I’m sure neither you nor I would be able to get a good grasp of the situation in a split second, let alone figure out an instant plan to overtake this Jeepers Creepers 2 wannabe creep.
And, would you even think for a minute something like this would be taking place in front of you on a bus? The unfortunate victim probably was far gone early on. I do know I’d be the first one out the door and I’d continue running until I came to the next town. So lay off – everyone on that bus was a victim and their families.

This mans already been stabbed X amount of times in the throat with a large hunting knife.
The stabbing occurred at the back of the bus. Do/Dide you expect people to take a running start at a man weilding a large knife?
Did you expect them to try and grab a machette style knife by the blade and save the day?
He just needed to swing that thing around and injure numerous people.
Take away your idiot guns and tasers that are a way of life for and cause more death than prevent and think for a second what you would have done in that situation with nothing to protect yourself, the victim or others around you.
The reason why this story is so huge is because IT’S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE!

I seriously wish Canada had the death penalty – with a case such as this. Where the killer is known – found on the scene – there is no need for evidence. He was in plain site of his victim. He should be executed for what he has done. Also I hope this is tried as first degree murder because of the actions taken.
I also think it is a said state that this immigrant – was allowed into Canada in the first place. And Unforunately – makes our immgration policy look like a joke. There needs to be tougher screening. Should a mentally ill person be allowed to work/live in Canada?

I am an American, and like me, I am sure there are many Americans whose hearts and prayers go out to the victim’s family as well as to the Canadian people. This is a terrible tragedy…
My condolences to the victim’s family for this disgusting crime. He clearly didn’t deserve it in any way and I hope he died quickly and without suffering.
To the passengers, you are very brave for what you accomplished in that short time, especially considering the amount of shock you were likely experiencing.
To those who think something could have been done to save the victim’s life, the guy got stabbed in the throat while sleeping! You can easily stab someone multiple times in a second so I don’t imagine the killer’s aim was far enough off not to have killed with the first few stabs. Even if someone had a gun or taser they would only have avenged the victim’s death, at best.
P.S. cut the America vs. Canada garbage, it’s completely out of place and a pointless thing to argue about.
