An explosive substance tossed from a home at the end of a cul-de-sac had enough power to badly damage four homes in the quiet neighborhood, authorities said.

A bomb squad found the dark brown substance today about 100 yards from the end of Via Taliana, where a resident buried the substance, unearthed it, then tossed it down a slope in O’Neill Regional Park, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies later blew it up.

One person was being questioned Monday afternoon and investigators believe an arrest will be made, said Lt. Chuck Wilmot, chief of police services for Rancho Santa Margarita.

Deputies responded to the cul-de-sac at about 7:30 a.m., after receiving a call that a resident may have buried explosives in his backyard, Amormino said.

When deputies arrived at the house, they found evidence that the backyard had been recently dug up, Amormino said. A resident said explosives had been buried in the yard about a week ago, but had been unearthed recently.

The explosives were then placed on the steep slope behind the home.
