President George Bush Warns Russia
President Bush on Monday continued to rebuke Russia for its invasion of neighboring Georgia, warning of a “dramatic and brutal escalation” of the conflict there by Moscow if a cease-fire did not take place.
The crisis there was at the top of Bush’s agenda as he returned to the U.S. from watching Americans competing at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
In a statement in the Rose Garden, the president said there appeared to be an attempt by Russia to unseat Georgia’s pro-Western president, Mikhail Saakashvili.
“I just met with my national security team to discuss the situation in Georgia. I am deeply concerned by reports that Russian troops have moved beyond the zone of conflict, attacked the Georgian town of Gori and are threatening the Georgian capital, Tblisi,” Bush said.
“If these reports are accurate, these Russian actions would represent a dramatic and brutal escalation of the conflict in Georgia,” he said.
