A long-delayed emergency siren system has been put into service for New York residents within 10 miles of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.
A spokesman for the plant’s owner, Entergy Nuclear, says the new 172-siren system took over from an aging 156-siren system at noon Wednesday.
Entergy had missed four deadlines since January 2007 but finally won approval last week.
The sirens are meant to alert residents to any emergency at the plant in Buchanan, about 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan.
The old system will remain in place for a year as a backup and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it will keep a close eye on the new one.
