After he gave multiple statements to investigators, Kenneth E. Barnes talked his way into an indictment in the slaying of pizza deliveryman Brian Wells.
A year after he was charged, Barnes has reached a deal that will allow him to try to talk himself out of a sentence that could keep him incarcerated for the rest of his life.
In the biggest development in the prosecution in what has become known nationally as “the pizza bomber case,” Barnes, 54, is scheduled to plead guilty in federal court in Erie on Wednesday for his role in the bombing death of Wells on Aug. 28, 2003, according to the defense and a notice docketed Friday.
As part of the proposed plea, Barnes will continue to cooperate with federal investigators as they prepare for the prosecution of the only other defendant in the Wells case — Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, 59, Barnes’ one-time fishing buddy, who was indicted with him in July 2007.
