Police in Baja California have discovered a sophisticated tunnel approximately 120 miles east of San Diego in the border town Mexicali. Authorities say organized crime groups planned to sneak drugs, people and weapons through the tunnel.
Baja police were investigating suspicious activity at a home just south of the U.S.-Mexican border when they discovered a group of men digging a secret tunnel into the United States, a tunnel complete with lights, an elevator and even air-conditioning.
Acting on reports of armed men outside a home, cops raided the house and found eight workers 20 feet underground digging the tunnel with picks and shovels.
The entrance in Mexico is inside a home in an upper middle class Mexicali neighborhood.
The tunnel dips about 20 feet underground and then heads straight north, under a hospital, to the United States.
Authorities say the tunnel dead ends about 120 feet shy of the international line.
A state police spokesman in Baja says the tunnel is like a piece of engineering art.
When olice arrested the 8 workers, they say two were cooking lunch for the alleged diggers.
About 70 tunnels have been found under the US Mexico border during the last seven years.
