Japanese police said Saturday they are investigating two explosions near a US naval base southwest of Tokyo, as media reports indicated the blasts may have been set off deliberately.
The explosions occurred late Friday, ahead of the controversial scheduled arrival later this month of a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier in the port of Yokosuka.
Police found metal pipes, batteries and lead wires at the scene of the blasts in a wood near Yokosuka, indicating the blasts may have been deliberate.
“Investigation is still under way as we have not specified any suspects,” said a spokesman for the Yokosuka police.
He said noone was hurt in the blasts, which damaged the roof of a nearby house.
Japan has agreed to accept the nuclear-powered USS George Washington to replace the Kitty Hawk, a diesel aircraft carrier which was deployed in Japan from 1998 until its departure earlier this year.
