To Rockmelon. First of all we shouldn’t discuss possible targets on a site open to the public. IF they don’t have an idea already, we do not need to give them one. 2nd. There should be a law regulating fertilizers that exceed a certain amount to be locked in a magazine with alarms and locks. Lack of common sense and complacency cause this problems in the first place.

Ref to entry above by Bob, they are talking about 4 tons of this stuff, not just a couple hundred pounds and according to the police,
the thief stole two types of fertilizer: Triple 19 and Urea. Police say the Urea is more dangerous of the two because it contains hydrogen. My point is simply that closed circuit cameras should be installed (cutting costs of having people stake out various areas) which would have certainly captured some activity of this theft. That amount should be fairly easy to spot (if enough people are aware of this incident).

This story should be on CNN, MSNBC, and FOX news. I sure hope that find the person who stole the fertilizer. I wonder why the alarm did not go off at the fertilizer company. I sure hope this is not a set up for bigger things to happen. We should keep our eyes open wide and pray that whoever did this will repent and return the stolen fertilizer.

Guy,I’m guessing that the fertilizer was kept outside and is generally considered as harmful and high risk as potting soil, sphagnum and fence posts which are kept in the same location.

Good response in changing the picture! At least now the picture shows the same description of the bags that were stolen. Our security system has got to be monitored much closer! Seems there would have at least been a few closed circuit cameras monitoring that area. Hope this issue gets resolved soon.

Hmmm….I live four miles north of Frederick. This is disturbing because I just realized that they may be using a farm in my area to make their “bombs”.

Just north of my house is Camp David (possible target). Leaving my house and heading south to DC, I would first pass within a half mile of Fort Detrick (possible target). I call the next fifteen miles “Chemical Alley” because it’s one bio chem company after another (possible target?) Then when you hit DC, well, there are innumerable targets. Also, just west of Frederick, is the possible terrorist training camp in Hagerstown.

The full impact of preparedness is just hitting me! I’m also beginning to wonder why we moved here!

Terrorist related? Not very likely. Converting the fertilizer to a usable explosive would take a sophisticated manufacturing operation and several tons of dangerous chemicals that are much harder to come by. It’s not the sort of fertilizer that you can just add some diesel to and have an instant bomb.

The police comment about the urea shows a woeful ignorance of something they should really knowledgable about.

It’s kind of hard to hide eight thousand pounds of fertilzer in your back pocket! Someone must have seen something!

Still, we always marvel at the tanks of fertilizer left unsecured in the farm fields around Phoenix.

I live just south of Baltimore, about an hour away from Frederick. I am leaning more to this being terror related. Hopefully we will find out something soon.
