Pakistan is their chief target. Not Iraq; not Afghanistan. They have already managed to assassinate Benazair Bhutto; there were at least 2 attempts of Musharraf's life when he was in power. The US strategic goal should be to (a) neutralize the Pak nukes as best as possible via geting Islamabad and New Delhi to negotiate down their arms race and destroy some of their weapons; (b) stabilize the Pak governemnt and encourage economic development, if possible; (c)wean the ISI and Pak Army away from its alliance with the Taliban (this will cost $$ for bribes); (d) bring the battle to Pakistan's NW Provinces, to the extent possible without destabilizing Pakistan, so the refugee stream floods and destabilizes Taliban Afghanistan, not Pakistan. And finally, the good news. While Pakistan is Muslim, it is the only Muslim country that ever freely elected a female as head of state, Ms. Bhutto--and it would have done so again, if not for Meshud's bomb that killed her. In the long run, Pakistan might grow into a nearly sane ountry. But, as Gailbrath said, in the long run we are all dead. Our job now is to stabiize Pakistan, strengthen its lawful authorities, & help it grow richer and thus produce less Jihadis, and perhaps someday we can look back, wipe our brow of sweat, and figure we won the war on terror without the loonies getting nukes and destroying New Delhi, or New York.
