Authorities in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year quietly broke up a major terrorist ring affiliated with al Qaeda that had plotted to blow up targets in Dubai – a banking hub that has long seemed immune to attacks by the terrorist group.
The disruption in May of the previously undisclosed plot came at a sensitive time for the UAE, which months earlier concluded an agreement with the United States that would allow the U.S. to sell it nuclear reactor technology and nuclear fuel. Congress has until Oct. 17 to block the agreement, which has been viewed with concern by some nonproliferation groups.

Toronto Man Plotted To Send Iran Nuclear Technology

A Toronto man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to export nuclear technology to Iran.
Mahmoud Yadegari appeared in court Friday morning to face federal customs charges, but he may face additional charges for violating a United Nations embargo.
Yadegari attempted to “procure and export” pressure transducers used in the production of enriched uranium, the RCMP said in a statement.
While enriched uranium is used to produce nuclear fuel, it is also a component of nuclear weapons. The UN Security Council banned exports of nuclear-related technology to Iran in 2006 because of its alleged efforts to build nuclear weapons.
Yadegari was allegedly purchasing the materials in the United States and sending them through the United Arab Emirates to Iran, said RCMP Sgt. Marc Laporte.
“The product was being exported through Dubai and then we’re alleging that the end destination was going to be Iran,” he said.
The charges followed an “extensive investigation” involving RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Service. “ICE is involved because the product originated in the U.S. and was being brought into Canada,” Laporte said.

Arabian Business.com is reporting the Atlantis hotel’s grand opening party may be at the center of a terrorism scare after British spies uncovered plans to target the lavish event in Dubai, to be attended by 2,000 VIPs.
There are fears Al-Qaeda is planning to bomb the event on Nov. 20 because it is seen by Islamic extremists as a symbol of decadence in a Muslim country, according to the UK’s Sky News television.
Business leaders, politicians, actors, musicians and members of the Dubai royal family have all been invited to the grand opening, which is estimated to be costing $28 million and will be headlined by pop princess Kylie Minogue.
British spies are reportedly monitoring talk of an attack in internet chatrooms and have a number of suspects who pose a credible threat under surveillance.

Neither Atlantis or the British embassy in Dubai were immediately available for comment when contacted by Arabian Business.
The resort, located on the Palm Jumeirah, officially opened on Sept. 24, despite a recent fire on Sept. 2 that destroyed the hotel lobby roof and caused smoke damage to the outside of the main hotel building.
The launch of Atlantis has become one of the most talked about events on the Dubai calendar, with several global superstars linked with the grand opening, including Michael Jackson and Madonna.
The 1,539-room resort encompasses a 46-hectare site with 17 hectares of water-themed amusement parks, an open air marine habitat, beaches, boutiques and restaurants.
