New York City police and law enforcement in the tri-state area began conducting a five-day training drill Tuesday to test whether they are prepared for the possibility of a “dirty bomb” attack.
The exercise, which is scheduled to run through Saturday, involves hundreds of personnel from 150 law enforcement and other first responder agencies who are partners in the Securing the Cities Initiative. It will be conducted on land, including the rail and highways, and on the waterways.
The drill is designed to test the ability to detect and interdict radiological material that could be used in a terrorist attack.

The threat of a dirty bomb attack has been a major concern for US intelligence and law enforcement officials for sometime now and although such an attack has not taken place inside the US, it should in no way imply that terrorists have ceased planning such an event.
The Wall St. Journal backs this up with a report.
Denying terrorists access to radiological materials that can be used in a dirty bomb attack—one that could bring our economy to a standstill and render areas uninhabitable for decades—is a major security challenge.
Should a dirty bomb or multiple dirty bombs be detonated in any American city, port complex, airport or train station, the result could be loss of life and widespread panic.

By Jenni Hesterman – What if the bad guys are somehow able to defeat us and set off a nuclear weapon in downtown LA? Not a dirty bomb, but an actual 10 kiloton nuclear device that results in the stereotypical mushroom cloud over the city.
How should first responders plan for this attack? What are the key actions that should be taken in the first hour, the second hour and beyond? How can we educate our public on what to do in the event of this attack?
This briefing was conducted at the Radiological or Nuclear Incident & Clinical Application Seminar. It is presented by Brooke Buddemeier from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and Global Security. Buddemeier works with DHS on preparation of cities for a nuclear detonation. He is a Certified Health Physicist and radiation safety specialist.
I think you will agree this is an eye opening presentation and I encourage you to watch it from beginning to end and absorb some critical information we don’t often see in the public domain.
Some key points:
Technical:
- A 10 KT detonation gives of the light of 1,000 midday suns up to a mile away for about 15 seconds
- A 10 KT detonation is the equivalent of 5000 Oklahoma City truck bombs
- Creates a 600 foot crater
- 3 miles out of from the epicenter, glass is still breaking in buildings -800,000 people in LA affected within the 3 mile circle
But, it’s not all bad news – if you can get to shelter you could survive the fallout and there is particle decay as time goes by.

With a few drops of blood, scientists are creating a way to tell who has absorbed dangerous radiation levels, part of the government’s preparations against a terror attack, and advance research that just might point toward new cancer care, too.
Duke University’s work aims to allow rapid triage in the aftermath of a dirty bomb explosion or other radiological emergency, to sort out who among potentially thousands of panicked people need treatment for radioactive fallout and who can go home.

US cities would be so overwhelmed by a dirty bomb or nuclear bomb attack that they would invariably rely upon the federal government for recovery, but agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have not yet completed their planning for delivering such assistance, congressional investigators warned Monday.
